Think you cannot paint? You can!
I created The Idaho Painter an alternative to to big box DIY video shows that have actors who only act like they can paint but really can barely act. My mission is to shatter the barriers of entry into painting and convince people that it can be a lot of fun painting and painting fun little projects on your own without an expensive professional painter. No experience is necessary.
I need your help to keep The Idaho Painter free videos running smoothly and not be so dependent upon, well me painting. If you have been inspired by even one of my videos, please consider a donation. Plus, check out the really cool Amazon tool store and gift shop I have on my website.

Just noticed that all Graco tips with an even numbered orifice size “are” FFT.
No disrespect but I unscrew all doorhandles
Great technique.
Interesting the way you spray both edges.
On doors with two different colours inside and out you may want to consider painting the hinge side with the outside colour and the lock side with the inside colour…looks much better when you open the door,
Your vids are great, I was wondering if there is any particular reason you use graco tips instead of titan , since you use the titan sprayer, I have the 440 impact myself( and Flexsprayer) love the machines, If the graco tips are better for some reason please let me know I will try them on my next job..
What an interesting dialect. Is that typical Idahoan?
skill
Nice job! Thanks for posting. I have several doors to paint at some of our fire departments. They are all oxidized and faded (smooth, steel doors). What do you think is the most cost effective and easiest way to prepare them for paint? Can I wipe them down or do you think I have to pressure wash them? I am hoping to stay away from pressure washing because I fear they will want the entire station done if they see me with a pressure washer out. Thanks.
Hey Chris. Do you and the team ever use floetrol in applications for Trim, Doors, or wall paint? Just wondering if you do and when. I used it on a black enamel this week ( Door ) rolled with foam. Just wondering.
Whats Chris! I Think your video is awesome, and that door came out amazing!I ‘m plaining on painting my grandmothers doors in a few days, my questions are, Do I need any special tip for the spray gun? Also does the painting machine have to be at a certain psi when using it? I ask because last year I bought a machine to paint the walls of my house. The machince I parchased was from lowes, and thats what I plan to use to paint the doors.
great stuff love your clips thanks for the up loads
Does your sprayer hold very little in the lines? A quart of paint would be enough to paint one door but I would think you wouldn’t be able to spray much if you used a quart due to the fact the paint is left in the line. How do you avoid this ?
generally love your work completely baffled by your choice to leave deadbolt and handle on the door.
For all the taking down the door, masking cover up etc, you should brush the door two coats during the time your there your last 2 days. Sometimes with the right acrylic , it will allow two coats in one day. NOW CHRIS ,WHY YOU WANT TO HAND BRUSH THE FRONT DOOR ALWAYS FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR CLIENT IN THE FUTURE. YOU WILL BE ABLE TO TOUCH UP ON ANY PANEL OR ALMOST ANYWHERE EASILY WITH BRUSH STROKES THAT WILL MATCH. IF ITS TOO SMOOTH A SPRAYED SURFACE , IT CAN ONLY BE TOUCHED UP BY SPRAYING TO MATCH. A FRONT DOOR GETS DINGED AND BUMPED ALOT,ARE YOU GOING TO SPRUCE UP THIS CLIENTS DOOR BY SPRAY SETUP CONSTANTLY ? I understand spraying to get the red to cover well and a nice smooth surface, this is for price and production but leaves the client unable to try to touch it up himself and only you to come back to re-spray sections than get marred
call a GRACO spray rep , get their phone # from any paint store before you take this advice
about using such a small orifice spray tip he mentions here
He cranks up the fluid pressure to squeeze out a heavy unthinned material with too small a fan pattern . To use a production painters approach isnt for everyone.
He has a crew and doesnt want too many tip sizes in the hands a regular painters
In the industry his 310 is for spraying thin viscosity materials like stain or clear laquer.
As he says in his other videos, I blow out the tips with 20 gallons of paint spraying with latex paints un thinned. This is un orthodox spraying. He gets a fine finish, but its thin.
He gets less spits with this high pressure through an airless and probably the control he wants. Usually you use a 414 fine finish with 10% water in an acrylic paint.
Especially when spraying doors, you need the fan width for a good 50% overlap.
you can even use a standard 415 graco tip to spray doors. Remember you layer these coating, one light pass first, let dry out 60-70% of the water .then another medium coat that will melt into the first coat, providing less orange peel and a well covered smooth
finish with the right mil thickness. These guys are a production team, his small orifice tips with a narrow fan pattern create a rounder pattern that a thin line 8 inch fan. He moves fast to spray because with such a small fan pattern at high pressure, it still is coming out of that tip heavy. I watch them go over alot of missed area moving so fast. With a wider fan at lower pressures , you can watch more closely how the material goes on . With a wider fan with a better overlap than Chris gets with too small a fan (6 inch), you will have more even coverage with less missed spots.
hell yeah Chris!
you use bug juice?
